The useful bits

  • The reported rates describe a selected 100-site sample and its conversion definitions.

What the resource covers

Marie Haynes reviewed 12 months of GA4 data across 100 sites and more than 145 million sessions. In that sample, ChatGPT sent 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search, while the recorded conversion rates were 13.8% for ChatGPT and 3.02% for Google organic. The figures describe this dataset, not a universal benchmark. Compare AI referrals with your own acquisition mix, conversion definitions and sample sizes before moving budget on the strength of a headline.

How to use the evidence

The reported rates describe a selected 100-site sample and its conversion definitions. They are not causal evidence that switching traffic sources would reproduce the same conversion rate. Review sample composition, conversion mix and attribution before applying the findings to another business.

Read the two charts with their denominators

The newsletter includes both the traffic comparison and the conversion chart. The latter is based on 55 sites with key-event tracking; 45 of the 100 sites had no conversion tracking. The charts therefore describe different samples and measures. Compare those definitions before treating the illustrated rates or volumes as a benchmark for another account.
