The useful bits

  • Compare SQP visibility bands with an independent rank series and keep sponsored impressions in scope.
  • Align the keyword, product and week before comparing SQP with an independent rank observation.

What the source covers

Alexander Swade’s study analyses six US brands across 44 weeks, covering 61,098 keyword-weeks. Its findings support broad visibility comparisons more than precise week-to-week rank tracking; advertising also complicates the relationship. The sample is agency-managed and unevenly distributed across brands. Use the research to decide what SQP can answer, rather than converting its relationships into a universal ranking formula.

Compare bands, not an invented exact rank

Align the keyword, product and week before comparing SQP with an independent rank observation. Segment branded queries and account for sponsored visibility. Investigate sustained differences across visibility bands; do not treat a change in purchase share as proof that organic position moved by a specific number of places.
