Claude adds background computer use on macOS in beta
Claude says computer use can now run in the background through Cowork and Claude Code while users work in another window.

What changed
Claude's official LinkedIn announcement describes background computer use in Cowork and Claude Code through the macOS desktop app, in beta for Pro and Max subscribers. The computer must remain on and the app open. It says Claude asks before first accessing an application and lets users block sensitive apps in advance. The screenshot illustrates that permission step rather than a completed task.
The help article recovered during review adds an important distinction: background windows are described for macOS 15 or later, while computer use more broadly also has other desktop support. The historical announcement here concerns the macOS background mode. It should not be read as proof that every desktop operating system offers identical behaviour. The support guidance also makes clear that desktop interaction is not a sandbox between the assistant and the applications it controls.
For a paid-media team, our recommended first exercise is a bounded, reversible task in an application the operator understands. Preparing a local comparison sheet from approved material is a more interpretable trial than handing over an ambiguous instruction to manage a live advertising account. Specify the intended output, the files it may use and the point at which a human should review the result. Working in another window does not remove responsibility for checking what the assistant changed.
Why it matters for advertisers
Background interaction can make desktop assistance less disruptive, but it does not make every workflow suitable for unattended execution. Distinguish drafting or inspection from actions that send messages, change budgets or publish material. The relevant test is whether the task can be completed accurately within the permissions deliberately granted.
What to check next
- Check the desktop version, supported plan and background-mode requirements before assigning the task.
- Allow only the applications needed, close unrelated sensitive material and define a clear stopping point before consequential actions.
- Review the resulting files or changes against the requested outcome; keep the desktop available while the computer-use task runs.

Claude adds background computer use on macOS in beta.
Claude says computer use can now run in the background through Cowork and Claude Code while users work in another window. The beta is available through Claude Desktop on macOS for Pro and Max subscribers, requires the computer and app to remain on, and asks before first using each app. For you, this means testing suitable desktop tasks with deliberate app permissions and reviewing the results before using them in client work.
