Prebid proposes letting ad servers bid into Prebid

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Prebid has proposed changing the auction flow so ad servers bid into Prebid, instead of Prebid passing its winning bid to an ad server.

What changed

AdExchanger reports that the proposal was presented at the 13 October Prebid Summit and is in public comment, with formalisation targeted for early 2027. It is not an implemented buying change. Publishers and programmatic teams can follow the proposal’s technical discussion, while treating claims about competitive or legal outcomes as analysis rather than settled consequences.

The proposed reversal changes which system makes the final comparison in the described auction flow. That is potentially significant for publisher architecture, but a proposal and a deployed transaction path are different states. The report does not establish that publishers should switch their production systems now or that the expected competitive effects have already occurred.

A useful technical review would trace the current flow and the proposed flow separately. Identify where bids enter, which component compares them, and what information and contractual relationships the implementation would require. Those questions help a publisher determine what to examine in the public discussion without assuming details that have not been finalised. Existing reporting and reconciliation processes would also need to be considered before any future operational change.

For buying teams, the immediate action is to follow the development rather than reclassify existing inventory as if the proposal were live. Ask supply partners to distinguish their current arrangements from planned work and record the version of any proposal being discussed. Claims that the design will settle a legal dispute, guarantee higher publisher revenue or remove every conflict of interest go beyond the evidence. The early-2027 target is a reported planning milestone, not a completed rollout.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers
