TikTok tests Shopping Assistant for product questions

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

TikTok is testing Shopping Assistant with eligible merchants. The experience answers product questions using merchant-provided information in TikTok’s in-app browser, while checkout remains on the merchant’s website inside that browser.

What changed

This is not a broad availability announcement, and market coverage, account access and test eligibility are not fully specified. It should therefore be approached as a product-information test, not as a reason to redesign a whole commerce programme. The useful question for a merchant is whether its existing product data can answer real shopper uncertainty accurately enough to move a visitor confidently into the established site checkout.

Begin with an information audit rather than a media experiment. List the questions a shopper must resolve before buying: variant, compatibility, ingredients or materials where relevant, dimensions, delivery constraints, returns, price conditions and care. Map each answer to a current merchant-controlled source. If an answer is absent, conflicting or conditional, fix the underlying product information before seeking access. A fluent answer is not valuable if it leaves out the condition that changes a purchase decision.

Create a small, representative product set for evaluation. Include a straightforward item, a variant-rich item and one with a common pre-purchase question. Have commercial, legal, customer-service and web teams review likely answers for accuracy, recency and appropriate qualification. Establish an escalation rule for questions that should lead to the product page, support content or a human-assisted route rather than a definitive response.

If access becomes available, evaluate the complete browser journey. Check whether the product answer remains consistent with the product page, whether selected variants carry through properly, whether checkout pages render and authenticate reliably in the in-app browser, and whether analytics can distinguish the journey without creating duplicate attribution. Monitor search terms or question themes where provided, abandonment after answers, product-page progression, checkout completion and support contacts. A rise in clicks alone would not show that the information experience improved decision quality.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

Product questions often expose a data-governance problem before they expose a conversational-interface opportunity. A merchant that treats the test as a catalogue-quality exercise can learn where its product information is incomplete, hard to retrieve or inconsistent across channels. The most durable outcome may be a better factual product source and clearer ownership of updates. That also reduces the risk that an assistant presents an answer which is technically sourced but commercially misleading because a limitation or exception was omitted.

What to check next

  • Confirm whether the merchant account and intended products are eligible; do not plan on universal access.
  • Audit product facts, conditions and update ownership before submitting any merchant information.
  • Test answers against the live product page and checkout journey in the in-app browser.
  • Define success using completed, valid orders and customer-service signals alongside engagement.
  • Keep a review log for inaccurate, incomplete or ambiguous product answers and route fixes to the source data owner.
