Research Finds More Google AI Overviews on Sampled Branded Queries
Chris Long found AI Overviews on 93 of 100 enterprise brand names tested, while DemandSphere and Ahrefs reported rises using different methods and query sets.

What changed
A strong result within a narrow sample
Chris Long found Google AI Overviews on 93 of 100 enterprise brand names he tested. DemandSphere and Ahrefs datasets cited in accompanying coverage also indicate a substantial rise.
These findings should not be combined into one market-share claim. Their query sets and methods differ, so they do not establish the proportion of all branded searches that display AI Overviews.
Visibility is not an advertising outcome
The cited work does not measure an effect on brand-ad clicks. A changed search-results page may coincide with a movement in paid click-through or conversion rates, but that does not establish that the AI Overview caused the movement.
A useful measurement plan annotates brand-term reporting with dates and observed search-result conditions, then examines click-through rate, conversion rate and volume over a meaningful comparison period. Budgets, creative, competition and seasonality should remain part of the same review.
A useful comparison is to separate brand queries that repeatedly show an AI Overview from similar brand terms where one is not observed, while retaining locale and device information. The exercise may help form a hypothesis, but it still cannot by itself eliminate selection effects or prove causation.
Make causality a testable question
Separate three questions: whether an AI Overview appeared, whether paid-brand performance changed and whether the evidence supports a causal relationship. This avoids treating a screenshot or sample statistic as an explanation for every account movement.
Teams collecting observations should record query, locale, device, date and result layout. The external findings provide context for monitoring, not proof that a universal bidding or budget response is warranted.
Why it matters for advertisers
AI Overviews may alter the search context for paid-brand campaigns, but the research does not establish their share of all branded queries or an effect on ad clicks.
