After 5 years at a performance marketing agency, I am considering moving in-house. What should I expect in terms of day-to-day work, salary negotiation, and career growth? Would love to hear from people who made the switch.

One thing nobody tells you: in-house can be lonely if you are the only paid media person. Make sure the company has a marketing team you can collaborate with, and stay connected to communities like this one for peer learning.

I made the switch 2 years ago after 6 years in agencies. Biggest differences: 1) You go deeper on fewer channels instead of being spread thin, 2) You get to see the full business impact of your work, 3) Salary-wise, negotiate based on total comp including equity/bonuses — base might be similar but total comp is usually higher, 4) Career growth is different — you become a specialist and potential marketing leader rather than climbing the agency ladder. Biggest surprise: how much time you spend on internal stakeholder management.
