Merchant Center now offers Merchant API uploads for product review data
Google Merchant Center now documents Merchant API uploads for product-review data, adding a programmatic route alongside established feed-delivery methods.
What changed
Google Merchant Center’s product-review data-source guidance now lists the Merchant API as a method for adding and managing product reviews. The official page places API use alongside scheduled fetch, SFTP or Cloud Storage, and direct computer upload. For teams maintaining a review feed programmatically, the change provides a documented route to automate review-data submission instead of relying only on file delivery.
The new method belongs to the Product Ratings program, which still has its own eligibility and operational requirements. Google says an account must sign up through the Product Ratings interest form and that a Google agent reviews the application before enabling the Merchant Center account. Merchants are also expected to have at least 50 product reviews before signing up. An API integration therefore does not bypass programme approval or make review stars appear immediately.
The data requirements remain material. Google requires a validated product-review XML source with the product identifiers needed to match reviews, such as GTIN or brand and MPN. The source needs regular updates at least monthly to remain eligible, and the page continues to describe file-size and packaging constraints for teams using file-based delivery. After a new data source is registered, Google says its initial status can be inactive and that reviews can take two to four weeks to go live after the first submission.
This is most useful for retailers and review-platform providers that already operate structured review pipelines. Before building against the API, confirm that the account is enabled for Product Ratings, that review data meets Google’s specification, and that internal ownership covers ongoing feed monitoring. Teams should also plan for policy disapprovals: the guidance says affected products must be corrected and then submitted for review.
Barry Schwartz documented the wording change and related navigation updates on 18 September. The official Merchant Center Help page is the primary product source. Neither source establishes a universal launch date, account-level access, or a guaranteed timeline for review visibility.
Why it matters for advertisers
The Merchant API gives review-feed teams a documented automation route, but it does not remove Product Ratings eligibility or ongoing data-quality requirements.
