OpenAI takes 4% commission on ChatGPT instant checkout sales
OpenAI is charging a 4% fee on every sale made through ChatGPT's instant checkout. Starting January 26, Shopify merchants can opt in to sell directly through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

What changed
Google and Microsoft are not charging fees yet: only OpenAI is monetising checkout from day one. Merchants can toggle AI platforms on or off individually, but products will still appear in AI responses with links to websites. To prevent products from appearing in AI responses entirely, merchants must contact AI companies or block web crawlers.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means a new transaction-based revenue model for AI commerce with margin implications.
