What changed

The first question for a prospective test is what the reported purchase value represents. A number can be technically valid while being a poor match for the business decision. Our recommendation is to compare a sample of values with order records and agree how the analysis will handle discounts, currency, cancellations and returns. This is preparation for evaluating the beta, not a claim about automated adjustments built into it.

Consider an illustrative retailer selling products with very different economics. A high-revenue order might contribute less profit than a smaller order after product costs and fulfilment. If the campaign is evaluated only on revenue, the team may favour a mix that looks attractive in an advertising report but is less attractive commercially. Clarifying the outcome before testing makes that disagreement easier to spot.

Keep the purchase definition and reporting conventions stable while assessing the change. A switch in optimization accompanied by a new value calculation can make it difficult to tell whether the campaign or the measurement changed. Where a correction is necessary, document its date and avoid presenting the entire before-and-after difference as a bidding result.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

Value-based evaluation is most useful when the media team and the business agree on what a better outcome looks like. Review purchase volume alongside value and inspect whether the customer or product mix changes. A revenue ratio on its own can hide a shift that deserves attention. The test should answer a commercial question for the advertiser rather than seek to reproduce someone else's performance claim.

What to check next

  • Verify beta access and document the purchase-value definition used for the evaluation.
  • Reconcile a sample of purchases and agree the treatment of cancellations and returns.
  • Compare value, volume and commercial quality before deciding whether to broaden the test.
