Universal Cart launches as Google's intelligent agentic shopping cart

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Universal Cart is Google's new agentic shopping cart, announced at Google I/O on 20 May. Brodie Clark and Juozas Kaziukėnas both flagged the launch as the standout I/O ecommerce announcement.

What changed

The cart runs on Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), allowing shoppers to find deals, manage alerts, and complete checkout across Search, YouTube, Gmail, and the Gemini app. Google Wallet integration surfaces savings, and the cart anticipates shoppers' needs using Gemini-powered reasoning.

Live in the US for retailers including Wayfair, Target (via account linking), The Home Depot, and Etsy sellers. Coming to Canada, Australia, and the UK in the coming months. Google's Shopping Graph now contains 60B+ product listings. Universal Cart turns those listings into a unified agentic purchase surface across Google's properties.

The structural read: ChatGPT tried this with its own shopping cart beta but quietly pulled it after just a few months, with limited retailer adoption. Walmart said ChatGPT's cart converted 3x worse than directing shoppers to walmart.com. Google's Universal Cart enters with materially better launch positioning: UCP is open and weeks to months ahead of deployed features, allowing merchants more flexibility, and the same protocol can power non-Google agents (Copilot, etc.). This is the most serious agentic-commerce push Google has attempted.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

For you, this means that e-commerce merchants in the launch markets should engage with their Google account teams immediately to scope Universal Cart integration. Particularly relevant for high-AOV categories where checkout friction has been a measurable conversion drag, and for retailers competing for visibility inside Gemini-powered surfaces.
