Walmart reports ChatGPT-integrated checkout converted three times worse than click-out
Walmart has disclosed that its Instant Checkout integration in ChatGPT achieved roughly one-third the conversion rate of simply sending users to Walmart's own website. Juozas Kaziukėnas, who reported the finding, noted this outcome prompted OpenAI to discontinue Instant Checkout in favour of directing users to merchant sites.

What changed
Walmart responded by releasing a standalone ChatGPT app for shopping, featuring its AI assistant Sparky, which it expects to reach ChatGPT and Gemini users in future.
The data point is significant because it challenges the assumption that reducing friction: eliminating the click-out to a product page: automatically improves conversion. For complex purchase decisions, the context provided by a full product page (reviews, images, availability, return policy) appears to be doing meaningful work that an in-chat checkout interface cannot yet replicate.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means the case for in-chat checkout is weaker than it appeared at launch: merchants should prioritise product feed quality and click-out experience over rushing to integrate checkout directly into AI interfaces.
