What changed

Google’s September policy notice schedules the change for 30 October 2026 and specifically limits it to YouTube inventory where alcohol advertising is locally permitted. The scope includes alcohol, related products and alternative beverages. Egypt, India, Indonesia and Poland are excluded from this update. The notice retains restrictions on minors and on targeting alcohol-related health information.

This is a future policy change in the September archive, not permission to switch on every alcohol audience immediately. The announcement does not remove the rest of Google’s advertising policies or local requirements, and it says further surfaces will be addressed separately. Product category, destination market and inventory therefore need to be considered together when interpreting the new permission.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

PMC analysis: the planning task is to separate campaigns that could become eligible under this announcement from those that remain outside it. A multinational drinks brand may have one creative concept but several different market decisions. Copying the same targeting plan across those markets would hide the distinction that the notice expressly makes.

The same care is useful for alcohol alternatives and adjacent products. Inclusion in the announcement is a reason to review the relevant classification, not to assume that every product description or landing page is acceptable. Build the decision around the product actually advertised and the people the campaign intends to reach. Once eligibility is established, judge the campaign against its commercial objective. The policy update creates a possible targeting option; it supplies no evidence of incremental sales or lower acquisition costs.

What to check next

  • Create a market-by-product list for planned YouTube activity and flag the four excluded markets separately before finalising the campaign brief.
  • Review the targeting and creative against the linked Google alcohol and personalised-advertising policies, keeping age and health-sensitive restrictions in the review.
  • Use 30 October 2026 as the announced start date for this specific change. Confirm the applicable policy and account options before activating affected campaigns.
