What changed

Google’s official help page schedules the switch from count-on-download to begin-to-render for 17 February 2027. It covers banner display inventory on desktop web, mobile web and connected TV in AdSense and Ad Manager. The later counting point requires the creative to load successfully and begin rendering. The document distinguishes this from inventory already using a compatible method.

A counted impression under the new method is still not a guarantee that a person saw the ad. Google says totals may decrease because some creatives that start downloading never reach rendering. Barry Schwartz reported the announcement at Search Engine Land; his suggestion about possible advertiser gains is speculation rather than a measured result of the future switch.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

PMC analysis: this creates a break in the definition of a reported number. If impressions fall around the change, a dashboard should not automatically describe the movement as lost reach or reduced demand. A denominator change can also affect calculated rates even when the underlying click or conversion counts do not move in the same way. Record the methodology alongside the metric so clients can interpret the comparison.

For teams buying from publishers, ask which counting method is used in the report or agreement rather than assuming identical column names mean identical events. Where an Ad Manager publisher can compare download and rendered metrics in advance, that comparison offers a more useful preparation than applying a guessed percentage reduction. The gap may also help identify creative-loading issues, but it does not on its own establish the cause. Investigate concentrated differences before changing delivery settings.

What to check next

  • Annotate the announced 17 February 2027 change in reporting plans and keep viewability measures separate from ordinary impression counts.
  • Ask relevant Ad Manager publishers to compare available download and begin-to-render metrics for representative inventory, noting the reporting period and format.
  • When evaluating a post-change movement, compare clicks, conversions and creative or buyer patterns before concluding that campaign performance or audience demand changed.

Google schedules begin-to-render counting for display impressions

Google will move AdSense and Ad Manager display impression counting to begin-to-render on 17 February 2027, covering web, mobile web, and connected TV banner inventory. Impressions will count once a creative has loaded and begun rendering, potentially reducing totals compared with counting when download starts; this does not make every counted impression viewable. For you, this means preparing reporting annotations and, where Ad Manager metrics allow, estimating the difference before comparing performance before and after the change.
