Apple rebuilds Siri on Google Gemini at WWDC
Apple has rebuilt Siri on Google Gemini, unveiled at WWDC 2026, flagged by Endrit Restelica. The overhauled assistant gains a dedicated app, remembers past conversations, can read what is on screen, and can take actions inside apps, working across Apple devices as one continuous thread.
What changed
The Gemini deal with Google is reported to be worth around $1bn a year, and Apple is letting users swap Siri's underlying model for ChatGPT or Claude through an Extensions system.
Apple had promised much of this at WWDC 2024 but never shipped it, paid $250m to settle a related lawsuit, and replaced the Siri leadership team before rebuilding. The result is a notable concession for a company that historically controls every layer of the experience, and a sign that no single model has won the assistant race.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means the default assistant on a billion-plus Apple devices is now a Gemini-powered, model-swappable surface: a significant shift in where consumers ask questions and discover products. Worth tracking as conversational assistants become a more important discovery layer above traditional search.
