ChatGPT abandons agentic commerce checkout
OpenAI is abandoning its Instant Checkout feature for ChatGPT shopping, reverting to redirecting users to retailer websites rather than in-app purchases. Staff realised that while users researched products in ChatGPT, they were not using it to actually buy.

What changed
The checkout launched last September with Walmart and Etsy but struggled with catalogue normalisation across retailers. This mirrors Facebook's and Google's unsuccessful shopping initiatives. For you, ChatGPT will now drive traffic to your site rather than host transactions, as with other discovery platforms.
