Ginny Marvin unpacks GML 2026 in a backstage Ads Decoded special

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Ginny Marvin, Google Ads Product Liaison, has published a backstage edition of Ads Decoded from Google Marketing Live 2026, sitting down with Google's Head of Ads and Commerce Vidhya Srinivasan and product leaders Chris Monkman, Josh Moser, and Christine Turner to unpack the day's biggest announcements. The piece is organised around four themes.

What changed

On intent, Vidhya framed the shift away from picking keywords as follows: with Gemini, Google can read longer, multimodal, more complex queries that static keyword lists no longer capture. AI Max and PMax handle this through search-term matching (existing exact and phrase keywords run as broad match in the backend, plus keywordless matching) and text customisation that generates headlines and descriptions grounded in the advertiser's domain, landing pages, and existing assets: with AI Brief acting as the natural-language steering layer for brand guardrails, matching, and messaging.

On creative, Josh positioned Asset Studio as the unified hub inside Google Ads, generating and iterating text, image, and video with Nano Banana and Veo, with Gemini Omni arriving for video generation. Third-party assets sync from Canva and Adobe, stakeholder approvals run inside the tool, and one-click A/B testing pits AI-generated creative against top performers. On ad formats, Chris Monkman explained the "principal-agent problem": making users feel the AI acts in their interest: which the new independent AI explainer addresses by evaluating ad relevance without advertiser influence across conversational discovery ads and highlighted answers. On measurement, Christine Turner walked through Data Strength and the three new metrics: Qualified Future Conversions, Attributed Branded Searches, and Campaign Type Attribution.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

For you, this means the backstage session is a useful synthesis of the GML announcements already covered, with the product leaders' framing on the "why" behind each shift. Worth a watch for the intent-versus-keywords and Data Strength sections in particular, which set the strategic context for the 2026 planning cycle. Note this also closes Season 1 of Ads Decoded, with full episodes returning in August.
