Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Google will disallow gambling-promoting content targeting Croatia from 7 October; the notice does not prohibit online gambling advertising itself.

What changed

Google’s policy notice says that from 7 October 2026 Google Ads will disallow promotion of online gambling-promoting content that targets Croatia. The update revokes existing certifications for that content type and closes new applications. It expressly says promotion of online gambling itself is not affected by this particular change. That distinction is central: the rule concerns gambling-promoting content, not a blanket statement that all gambling advertising becomes ineligible in Croatia.

The affected category can include content that promotes gambling operators or services without itself being the gambling operator. Affiliate, review, comparison, lead-generation and information sites can therefore need a different assessment from direct operator activity. Teams should assess the actual content and destination, account certifications and country targeting rather than relying on a high-level campaign label.

For advertisers and agencies, the deadline is an operational checkpoint. Inventory campaigns, ad groups, assets and landing pages that can reach Croatia. Separate direct operator activity from affiliate or promotional-content activity. Confirm which legal entity and account holds the applicable certification, and record whether a campaign is excluded from Croatia or has a compliant replacement route. If a feed, responsive asset or automated campaign can route traffic to a relevant page, include it in the review rather than checking only keyword campaigns.

This is a dated policy notice, not evidence that every Croatian gambling-related campaign will be removed on the same day. The final result depends on content category, targeting, certifications and Google’s policy interpretation. A clear internal record makes it easier to explain a disapproval or delivery change after the effective date and avoids overstating scope to stakeholders.

The official policy notice is the appropriate source and its author is an organisation, not an identified individual. No generic gambling image is attached because it would add visual drama without improving the policy explanation or provenance.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE
