Google's pre-GML practitioner guidance: four tips to get more from ad creatives
Ahead of Google Marketing Live, Google has published practitioner guidance on getting more value from ad creatives inside Google Ads, surfaced by Ginny Marvin (Product Liaison). The four recommendations cover the full creative lifecycle.

What changed
Advertiser-in-the-loop tools: use text guidelines today, and the upcoming AI Brief and text disclaimers (both covered in Week 18) to steer the AI on what ads should and shouldn't say.
With automated tools, Asset Studio is the hub for scaling creative production while keeping brand consistency and audience resonance. Search asset optimisation: optimise both asset and landing-page variety, not just the creative side. Ad strength interpretation: understand what the Ad Strength metric does and doesn't indicate, so it doesn't become a false north star. Google has also published an internal guide from its Media Lab and Creative Works team with recommendations on creative variety across campaign types.
The guidance sits ahead of GML on 21 May as a foundation-setting publication: establishing the creative discipline Google expects advertisers to bring before the post-GML product roadmap arrives. The four tips function less as new tactical advice and more as a re-statement of the principles that AI-driven matching (AI Max, Performance Max, AI Brief) requires to perform well.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means creative production teams should treat the guidance as a pre-GML checklist. Worth auditing current asset variety, landing-page variety, and Ad Strength interpretation against the four-tip framework before the GML announcements reshape what's possible on the bidding and matching side.
