Amazon advertising revenue reaches $19.6 billion in Q3

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Amazon reported advertising-services revenue of $19.637 billion, up 11% on a reported basis. Management's earnings commentary connected the sequential growth comparison to Prime Day timing and indicated an expectation of stronger year-on-year growth in Q4.

What changed

Revenue growth and company guidance do not establish auction inflation or a requirement to lock budgets early. Use the results for market context while keeping spend decisions tied to product economics, inventory and measured demand.

The reported revenue line is advertising services, not Amazon's total retail sales or the gross sales generated by advertisers. An 11% increase in that company revenue measure cannot be translated directly into an 11% increase in auction prices. Changes in demand, inventory, advertiser participation and product mix can contribute to the total.

Management also pointed to Prime Day timing when discussing the sequential growth comparison. Calendar effects matter when comparing quarters: a shopping event moving between periods can affect the apparent pace without establishing the same trend in every marketplace or advertising format. Keep the event calendar alongside year-on-year comparisons.

The expectation of stronger year-on-year growth in Q4 is forward-looking commentary. It is not a guaranteed result, and it does not instruct an advertiser to reserve a particular budget. A brand's plan still depends on product availability, contribution margin, expected demand and the performance of the campaigns it can actually run.

For a business review, separate revenue, attributed sales and incremental profit. Amazon's advertising revenue reports what the platform earned; a seller's attributed-sales report and a profit calculation answer different questions. Presenting one as evidence for another can obscure whether an increase in media spend is worthwhile for the advertiser.

The newsletter uses the 29 October announcement date and retains Luis Rijo's PPC Land reporting credit. Amazon's results release and the earnings discussion form the source trail. This is business context for retail-media planning, not a forecast of account-level costs or returns.
