AI Assistant set to become a Default Channel Group in GA4
Google Analytics 4 is adding AI Assistant as a Default Channel Group: a structural addition that will let GA4 properties automatically track traffic from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and other AI assistants as a discrete channel rather than burying it under Referral or Direct. Brie E.

What changed
Anderson has flagged the addition with high enthusiasm; Janani Nagarajan has provided practitioner framing, noting the change is "quiet but big-impact": GA4 can now natively track AI assistant traffic without custom UTM tagging or referrer-rule workarounds.
The structural shift matters because AI-assistant traffic has been growing rapidly across all properties and has been functionally invisible inside default GA4 reporting. Practitioners have either built custom channel groupings (high friction) or accepted the misattribution (data loss). The native Default Channel Group closes the gap.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means GA4 reporting workflows can finally treat AI Assistant traffic as a first-class channel. Worth planning a baseline measurement window once the addition rolls out: comparing AI Assistant volume against Organic Search, Direct, and Referral cohorts to understand where AI traffic is actually coming from and where it converts. Particularly relevant for content-driven sites where AI citations have been driving uncredited traffic.
