Google moves Missed Opportunities into Recommendations

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Google's Missed Opportunities tool moves into Recommendations, where estimates describe activity constrained by bids or budgets.

What changed

Thomas Eccel documented a Missed opportunities beta inside Google Ads Recommendations. His post says the tool had previously appeared in Google Ads Labs. The saved screenshot separates actual clicks from estimated missed clicks associated with low bids and constrained budgets, with additional tabs for conversions and conversion value. It gives advertisers another way to inspect Google’s proposed growth opportunities.

The important distinction is between an observed result and a counterfactual estimate. The actual campaign ran with its recorded settings; the missed-opportunity figures describe what the system estimates might have happened with different bids or budgets. Those figures are not booked revenue that the business can recover simply by approving a recommendation. They also do not establish that the extra traffic would meet the advertiser’s margin or lead-quality requirements.

Use the proposed constraint to decide what to investigate. A budget-limited campaign calls for a different discussion from a campaign whose bids are below the level the tool proposes. In the first case, examine whether more spend is affordable at the expected marginal return. In the second, consider how much additional efficiency the business is willing to trade for volume. Record which assumption a test is intended to challenge.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

A prominent estimate can make a recommendation feel more certain than it is. Compare the proposed increase with business capacity, stock or the sales team’s ability to handle enquiries. If a test is justified, set its budget and success measure before making the change, then compare observed outcomes with the forecast. This turns the interface into a source of testable questions instead of a reason to raise bids and budgets automatically.

What to check next

  • Find the beta in accounts where it is available and inspect the stated constraint.
  • Separate recorded results from estimated missed clicks, conversions and value.
  • Test a justified change against margin, capacity and observed incremental outcomes.

Attribution evidence and limitations

Read Thomas Eccel’s complete original post and inspected his named screenshot. The image supports the beta location and separate bid/budget estimates. Replaced the source’s rhetorical description of exact lost revenue with an explicit estimate distinction and original marginal-return analysis.

Original source links and verified profile links are retained. A missing profile remains unresolved rather than being inferred from a name match.

Missed Opportunities graduates from Labs to Recommendations

The Missed Growth Opportunities tool moved from Labs to the Recommendations tab, renamed Missed Opportunities. It shows traffic, conversions, and revenue lost to limited bids or budget caps. For you, this means Google is packaging bid and budget headroom as recommendations, so validate the numbers before acting on them.
