Google Ads · Status at source date: Policy announcement

Financial Services Verification will extend to the US and Canada

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Google announced on 20 October that its Financial Services Verification programme will expand to the United States and Canada, with phased implementation planned for early 2027. The announcement is signed by Keerat Sharma, Google's VP and General Manager of Ads Privacy and Safety. It does not set an immediate deadline for advertisers.

What changed

The programme adds a financial-services credentials check to advertiser identity verification. Google says relevant advertisers will need to demonstrate authorisation through regulators or recognised registries before running certain financial ads. Country-specific information about accepted credentials, registries and onboarding will be provided before enforcement. The US work includes the American Bankers Association's registry; Google is also engaging with the Canadian Bankers Association.

For paid-search teams, the practical distinction is between knowing that a requirement is coming and having an actionable verification instruction. This announcement supplies the former. It does not mean an account is non-compliant today, and it does not establish that an existing identity-verification approval satisfies the future financial-services process.

PMC's preparation advice is to identify who owns regulatory records for each advertised business, which legal entity appears in the account, and who can respond to verification requests. Agencies managing several brands should keep those responsibilities separate rather than assuming one set of documents will cover every advertiser. This is planning advice, not a substitute for Google's forthcoming country instructions.

Keep campaign-launch plans and compliance work connected. When Google publishes the detailed requirements, compare the account's actual notification with the applicable country guidance before submitting information. Record the notification and completion dates so an agency and client can distinguish an approaching obligation from a completed check. Until then, early 2027 is a rollout window, not a single confirmed enforcement day.
