Google introduces AI-qualified call leads to replace duration-only measurement
Google has published guidance for AI-qualified call leads, a new conversion classification system that replaces call duration as the primary signal of lead quality. The system uses Google AI to evaluate call recordings for intent signals: such as a customer inquiring about specific services, scheduling a consultation, or demonstrating readiness to purchase: and counts only qualified calls as conversions.
This update uses a PMC cover because no suitable source image was available when checked on 8 Sept 2026. Available source and video links are retained.
What changed
The mechanism uses a tiered fallback: if recording is unavailable, duration serves as a secondary signal; if a Google forwarding number is unavailable, ad interaction data serves as a last resort.
Call recording is now turned on by default for most US and Canadian advertisers, with healthcare and financial services excluded. Reports will now include an AI-generated call summary and tags such as #HighIntent or #ConsultationScheduled. Smart Bidding will optimise toward higher-quality conversions rather than calls that simply pass a duration threshold: filtering out spam calls, robocalls, and misdials that previously cleared the bar.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means three immediate actions: confirm call recording status in account settings; review the regional eligibility for any non-US/Canada call campaigns (currently excluded); and rebaseline historical call conversion volume in any reporting that uses call campaigns as a primary KPI, since the qualification logic will reduce raw counts and shift the cost-per-conversion baseline.
