Google clarifies call and offline conversion setup guidance
Barry Schwartz reported additions to Google’s conversion-measurement help page covering call reporting, call-duration checks and offline-import troubleshooting. The current Google page includes the cited guidance. This is a documentation clarification, not evidence of a newly launched conversion feature or a new blanket requirement.
What changed
Schwartz’s Search Engine Roundtable report is dated 3 September, while later discovery coverage appeared on 10 September. Google’s help-page change date is not independently established. Google remains the author of the documentation, and Schwartz is credited for documenting the additions in this reporting chain.
The retained Google help text points readers to call reporting, call-duration settings and the Call Details report. Its offline-import guidance discusses the conversion-action source, exact name matching and diagnostics. These are checks to make against the relevant setup. They do not establish a universal instruction to change every call action to Primary, nor do they turn this documentation update into a new product rollout.
Why it matters for advertisers
Use the source as a troubleshooting checklist and keep each conversion’s bidding role aligned with the account’s measurement plan.
For a measurement team, separate a missing-record problem from a bidding-design decision. First identify the event that should have been recorded and follow one example through the systems involved. Changing the role of a conversion before understanding the failure risks altering the campaign’s goal while leaving the underlying data problem unresolved.
A call-duration threshold is a definition of what the account counts, not proof that a caller became a qualified customer. Compare that definition with the business’s lead-handling process before using a change in reported calls as evidence of improved acquisition. For offline imports, keep a small audit trail of the submitted action name, event date, import result and diagnostic message. It gives an implementation owner a concrete failure to investigate without requiring the whole campaign configuration to be changed at once. These are troubleshooting recommendations, not observations from a tested account.
What to check next
- Use the linked Google documentation to review the relevant call or import setup, preserving the account’s intended Primary and Secondary conversion roles.
- Trace a known call or offline outcome from the business record to the advertising report and note where the expected evidence stops.
- Check source and action-name consistency and record the actual diagnostic result before retrying an import.
- Document any tracking correction separately from a change in lead quality or bidding strategy; the reporting date is not the help page’s confirmed change date.
