Google Shopping tab now displays sponsored ads inside the free listing grid
Google has begun displaying sponsored product ads directly within the free listing grid on the Google Shopping tab: a placement previously reserved exclusively for organic listings. Brodie Clark first documented the change on 20 April 2026; SERP Alert followed with broader analysis.

What changed
Sponsored tiles carry a per-item "Sponsored" label rather than a section-level disclosure.
This is the third surface where Google has pushed paid results into a previously organic grid context, after AI Mode (February 2026) and the main search results (April 2026). The Shopping tab arrangement had been stable since April 2020, when Google opened the tab to free listings globally. The density of paid tiles within the grid is variable, between one and four ads in some configurations.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means the boundary between paid and organic Shopping inventory has effectively dissolved. Free-listing volume in the Shopping tab will likely decline as a share of impressions, making feed quality and Shopping ads strategy more interdependent. Worth re-baselining historical Shopping tab traffic patterns against the new grid composition.
