Google Tag Manager publishes details on the upcoming container update
Google has released a support page detailing the upcoming Google Tag / Google Tag Manager container update, flagged by Simo Ahava. A GTM container will now function as a fully operational Google Tag in itself, and any additional Google Tags added as destinations will benefit from optimised loading, shared settings, and a mutual permissions model.

What changed
Confirmed changes include a visual, no-code setup flow to upgrade existing tags, centralised settings and user access across Google products, and a new "Destinations" model that reduces the need for separate scripts for GA4, Google Ads, and Floodlight. The upgrade is opt-in: nothing breaks until a team chooses to migrate: and advanced users retain full control. No fixed rollout date has been set.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means measurement teams should read the support page now to understand the destinations model before the rollout begins. Worth planning the opt-in migration deliberately rather than reactively, particularly for containers that currently serve multiple Google products via separate scripts.
