Microsoft introduces Web IQ to ground AI assistants in live web data
Microsoft Advertising has set out its "AI economy" vision ahead of Cannes Lions on its blog, centred on Web IQ. Introduced at BUILD 2026, Web IQ is a suite of AI-native grounding APIs that connect AI systems to fresh, real-world intelligence from web pages, news, images, and videos, and is already used by assistants such as Copilot and ChatGPT.

What changed
It sits within Microsoft IQ, a unified intelligence layer Microsoft positions as the way brands make their business legible to AI.
The argument for advertisers is that "grounding" is how AI reads a business: its website, product details, brand mission, and FAQs: and therefore how a brand surfaces when a shopper asks an assistant for a recommendation. As discovery shifts toward AI answers, being legible to grounding infrastructure becomes a visibility lever alongside traditional search.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means that how AI assistants read and represent your business is becoming a distinct discipline, with Microsoft building infrastructure that feeds major assistants. Worth auditing whether your product data, brand information, and FAQs are structured and accessible enough for AI systems to operate on accurately.
