What changed

Interview statements, not release commitments

In an interview with Eric Seufert, Asad Awan, who leads monetisation product and engineering at OpenAI, said advertising had reached a billion-dollar annual run rate in under 200 days, with tens of thousands of advertisers in more than 40 countries. These are attributed statements from the interview, not independently established measurements in this review.

Awan described outcome-optimised bidding as the priority and prompt-driven ad creation as a direction. Neither statement announces an account-level product, rollout date, eligibility condition or expected advertiser result. He also ranked user trust above advertiser value and revenue, providing context for how OpenAI says it orders product considerations.

Prepare measurement before automation

The practical implication is to make conversion definitions ready for evaluation rather than assume outcome bidding is already available. An optimisation system can only pursue the signal it receives, which may differ from the business result a team actually values. A completed form, purchase, qualified lead and retained customer are not interchangeable outcomes.

Audit one candidate conversion from collection through reporting. Check what action creates it, whether duplicate events are possible, how value is assigned and who owns corrections. This is preparation for a possible future workflow, not evidence that OpenAI currently exposes outcome optimisation.

Prompt-driven creation raises a different governance decision. Teams can define in advance which claims require substantiation, which brand elements cannot be altered and who approves generated material. That readiness should not be presented as proof of feature access. Likewise, the interview’s scale claims should not be translated into assumptions about inventory, advertiser eligibility or likely campaign performance.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

The interview indicates a measurement-led direction for OpenAI advertising, but its forward-looking language is not a launch notice. Clear conversion and creative controls can be prepared without overstating availability.

What to check next

  • Audit the definition and collection of the conversion most likely to represent a meaningful business outcome.
  • Keep attributed interview statements separate from confirmed account capabilities in product roadmaps.
  • Define human approval and claims-review responsibilities for any future prompt-generated advertising.
