GA4 rolls out a new Source grouping dimension and updates the Source platform
Tamás Geiger has flagged two related GA4 updates landing this week. A new Source grouping dimension is rolling out across Google Analytics properties: a slow rollout that may take weeks to appear in individual accounts.

What changed
Source grouping sits between the Source platform and source/medium: wider than the Source platform but more granular than channel grouping, derived purely from the source dimension, meaning a single Source group row includes both paid and organic traffic. The dimension appears in Advertising workspace conversion-based reports and is populated retroactively.
The Source platform dimension is being updated to recognise third-party platforms based on source + utm_medium. When the source is a known third-party platform and the medium indicates paid traffic, the source platform will be set accordingly; otherwise, a new "Unlabeled" value will be shown. Tamás's example: source 'instagram' + utm_medium=paid → Source group becomes 'Instagram', and Source platform becomes 'Meta Ads'.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means GA4 reporting workflows should audit existing channel grouping configurations against the new Source grouping and updated Source platform values. Particularly relevant for cross-channel reporting, where the previous source / medium granularity has been the structural input to channel attribution logic.
