Google renames payment settings to Postpay and Prepay
Google Ads has replaced the labels “Automatic payments” and “Manual payments” with “Postpay” and “Prepay” in billing guidance and on account screens.

What changed
The billing labels map Automatic payments to Postpay and Manual payments to Prepay. Hana Kobzová is credited by PPC News Feed with spotting the terminology update. Google’s linked help pages describe Postpay as charging after advertising costs accrue and Prepay as deducting costs from funds supplied before the ads run. The coverage describes a naming change rather than a new charging mechanism.
The help pages still distinguish payment settings from the payment methods available to an account. They also warn that changing settings is subject to availability. A new label in Billing should therefore not be read as permission to switch payment arrangements or as evidence that an account’s payment threshold has changed. Country, account access and the actual options shown remain relevant when someone wants to make a separate operational change.
Why it matters for advertisers
PMC analysis: this is most likely to create confusion in the handoff between advertising and finance teams. A colleague comparing an old training document with a new billing screen could think the account has been moved to a different arrangement. A two-column glossary in the team’s payment procedure can resolve that ambiguity without changing the account. Keep the old terms alongside the new ones while older invoices, screenshots and support correspondence remain in use.
This is also a useful point to check who owns billing questions. A campaign manager may recognise a renamed button without knowing whether finance intends to change cash-flow timing. Keeping terminology updates separate from an actual switch makes approval and reconciliation clearer. There is no reason to alter budgets or campaign delivery solely because the billing language is different.
What to check next
- Update internal billing instructions to show Automatic payments as Postpay and Manual payments as Prepay; retain the historical labels where old documents use them.
- Ask the account’s billing owner to compare the current setting and threshold with the existing payment procedure, recording any actual difference separately from the rename.
- Before a requested switch, check the options available in that specific account and the relevant Google Help page. A terminology change alone does not establish eligibility.

Google renames payment settings to Postpay and Prepay.
Google Ads has replaced the labels Automatic payments"s and Manual payments " with " Postpay" and " Prepay " in billing guidance and on account screens. Postpay still charges advertising costs after they accrue, while Prepay deducts costs from funds added in advance; the change in terminology alone does not alter the charging arrangement. For you, this means updating client explanations and internal billing instructions so that the new labels are recognised without triggering unnecessary changes to payment settings.
