Google Analytics highlights API management for user groups
Google Analytics now documents programmatic user-group management through the Google Marketing Platform Admin API. The API methods date from 18 September; the Analytics note is dated 5 October.
What changed
Google's Analytics release notes add an access-management update for teams maintaining large account and property estates. Groups and their membership can be managed programmatically, including Member and Owner roles. Google says User Admin or Org Admin permissions are required in the relevant organisation.
The linked developer changelog identifies the underlying service as the Google Marketing Platform Admin API, with the new methods in v1alpha. It records them on 18 September 2026. The later Analytics explanation should not be read as evidence that those methods first launched on 5 October. This is administration of access, not a new campaign optimisation feature.
The create-group reference requires a parent GMP organisation. Adding a group member uses that organisation's user-group resource. Both methods document an Analytics update OAuth scope. Having credentials for a reporting connector alone does not establish that it has the correct scope, organisation access or authority to change membership.
For an agency measurement lead, a useful first step is to map who owns access when a client joins, a colleague changes role or a contract ends. Record the intended members and approver for each group before asking a developer to automate updates. A repeated manual task is a better starting point than broad permission changes across every client.
Treat the rollout as a controlled administration change. Compare intended membership with the resulting group, keep a record of approvals, and verify removal as well as addition. These are PMC's recommended checks, not a claim that Google mandates this workflow or that PMC has tested an integration. The documentation does not establish eligibility for every Analytics setup; confirm the organisation requirements with its administrator.
Why it matters for advertisers
Access automation can reduce repeated administration, but a mistaken group change can affect several people. A defined owner and a small verified workflow make the feature more useful than an unreviewed bulk update.
What to check next
- Confirm the GMP organisation and the administrator responsible for access.
- Compare the required methods, roles and OAuth scope with the integration design.
- Validate one approved membership workflow before extending automation.
