Google Tag Manager moves inside Google Ads: biggest GTM update in years

Written by Paid Media Collective

What changed

May 2026: a UI refresh inside Google Ads. The Container Overview becomes interactive, key Google Tag settings move into GTM, and Preview Mode finally surfaces automatic event detection, and User Provided Data during debugging: all visible directly in the Data Manager section of Google Ads without leaving the platform.

Summer 2026: the bigger architectural shift. Google Tag containers and Google Tag Manager containers begin merging development. GTM containers can opt into an upgrade flow that turns them effectively into Google Tags, with legacy Google Tags inside the container migrating to "Destinations." The net effect: GTM no longer needs to load separate gtag.js files per destination: everything is handled through the container JS, saving bandwidth and browser resources.

A new Visual Event Builder walks through the site to a conversion, automatically drafting tags, triggers, and variables. Container Optimisation sends data directly to destinations without the additional Google Tag load, and the migration is workspace-ring-fenced with a clean back-out. Simo Ahava has the deepest technical breakdown; Doug Hall maps the rollout sequence with governance recommendations.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

For you, this means tagging governance is the immediate priority. The upgrade is opt-in and reversible, but the access controls: who in your organisation has admin permissions on linked Google products: need to be audited before the rollout broadens. The Visual Event Builder will lower the technical bar to tag implementation, which is good for speed and bad for quality control unless your team has a review process. Worth mapping your trading peaks against the rollout calendar so that any container upgrade testing happens outside critical periods.
