Trump signs an AI executive order with a voluntary frontier-model framework
President Trump has signed an executive order, "Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security," which establishes a voluntary framework for AI developers to engage with the federal government before releasing advanced models, as flagged by Luiza Jarovsky. Federal agencies are directed to design the framework by 1 August 2026.

What changed
Under it, developers may ask the government whether a model meets the "covered frontier model" threshold and provide access for up to 30 days before public release, with the designation threshold set through a classified NSA benchmarking process.
Jarovsky stressed that, contrary to much early reporting, the order does not impose a mandatory registration or pre-clearance regime: participation is expressly voluntary and pre-clearance is prohibited. The order's focus is cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and national security, and several reports tie its trigger to Anthropic's Mythos model preview, which was shared with the government over cyber-capability concerns and used as a blueprint.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means the near-term US regulatory posture on frontier AI is voluntary rather than mandatory, which bears on how quickly powerful new models reach the market. Worth treating as background on the policy environment shaping the AI tools entering paid media, rather than a rule that changes day-to-day practice.
