Local Services Ads are taking up more space in an observed layout

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Anthony Higman has documented a larger Local Services Ads presentation. The immediate relevance is visibility: a larger unit changes the search page around local businesses.

What changed

It does not establish new campaign controls, a universal rollout or improved lead quality. Keep screenshots of relevant searches in your own market when assessing changes in local visibility.

Capture the search, device, location and visible ad treatment when reviewing the observation. Check whether calls reach the correct business and whether the opening hours and service area match the experience shown. Use qualified enquiries and completed work as outcomes; the height of an ad block is not a commercial performance measure.

The layout is also relevant to the information a prospective customer sees before choosing a local service. Business identity, service relevance and the route into a call or enquiry may become more important when the unit occupies a larger part of the screen. A review should therefore inspect the customer-facing details as well as the visual dimensions of the ad.

For a local advertiser, an appropriate test question is whether the observed presentation changes the mix of enquiries received in the relevant market. Record unsuitable calls, wrong-area requests and missed connections alongside valid leads. Compare equivalent periods with similar service capacity rather than attributing a change immediately to the design. If the layout cannot be reproduced, retain it as a documented observation and continue improving the business information and enquiry handling that remain under the advertiser’s control.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

More prominent local advertising may change how people choose a provider on mobile. It is not evidence that any particular advertiser will receive more qualified enquiries or that the format is universally available.

What to check next

  • Record device and market when checking local ad layouts, and compare qualified calls rather than screen space.
