Merchant Centre automatic updates need a joined-up feed review

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Merchant Centre automatic updates can use website information to help align supported product attributes, but they do not remove the need to review feeds, landing pages and settings together.

What changed

The documented role

Google’s guidance describes automatic updates as a way for Merchant Centre to use website information to help keep supported product attributes aligned. The feature may therefore assist where submitted product data and information on a landing page have drifted apart. The evidence does not describe it as a remedy for every product-data inconsistency.

Review the complete chain

An operational audit should compare the feed, the corresponding product landing pages and the applicable automatic-update settings. A submitted value may still be present while no longer matching the page reached by a shopper. Conversely, a website change may expose a feed process that has not refreshed as expected.

Capture the feed value, landing-page value and relevant setting at the same point in time when investigating an item. That provides a stronger diagnostic record than attributing a discrepancy to either the feed or the automated process without comparison.

Set realistic expectations

Evaluate automatic updates against the supported attributes and the mismatches affecting the catalogue. Enabling the feature is not evidence that every discrepancy will be detected or repaired. The practical objective is a consistent representation across submitted data, the website and the applicable configuration.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

Product-data alignment affects both item quality and the speed of diagnosis. Treating automatic updates as one control within a broader process reduces reliance on assumptions about what the feature can repair.

What to check next

  • Compare a sample of supported attributes across the feed and landing pages.
  • Review automatic-update settings alongside recent website and catalogue changes.
  • Log investigated mismatches with contemporaneous feed, page and setting values.
