Beta calculator converts campaign margin into breakeven ROAS

Written by Paid Media Collective

What changed

A margin-based calculation

Arpan Banerjee shared a beta Target ROAS calculator that asks for campaign margin excluding ad spend. In the observed example, a 15% margin produces an approximate breakeven ROAS of 667%. The screen makes the relationship between the stated margin and the calculated bidding target more explicit, but it does not validate the commercial assumptions entered.

Before relying on the result, define what the margin includes. Check whether it reflects the costs the advertiser intends to recover and whether one figure is appropriate for the products, fulfilment model and campaign concerned. A correct calculation can still be commercially misleading when its input omits a material cost or blends products with different economics.

Keep breakeven and profit distinct

Breakeven ROAS is not a retained-profit target. It may provide a reference point, but the eventual bidding objective also depends on the desired return, tolerance for investment and role of the campaign. The displayed figure should therefore be treated as an output from an assumption, not as an account-specific recommendation.

If the beta appears in the relevant account, document the margin definition beside the proposed ROAS and ask the appropriate finance or commercial owner to challenge it. This is governance guidance, not a validation function demonstrated by the calculator.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

Automated arithmetic can make an output appear more authoritative than its inputs warrant. The calculator is useful only when the stated margin represents the economics the advertiser actually wants bidding to recover.

What to check next

  • Check whether the beta calculator appears in the relevant account.
  • Document the costs included and excluded from the campaign-margin input.
  • Compare the breakeven result with the campaign’s retained-profit objective before setting a target.
