What changed

Scope of the documented beta

Google’s undated documentation describes automated bidding for eligible efficient-reach, non-skippable-reach and target-frequency video reach campaigns. Video view campaigns are excluded. Advertisers should therefore confirm both account and campaign eligibility before planning a test.

When the target-CPM option is left unset, Google can adjust bids to spend the campaign budget. Jyll Saskin Gales highlights the significance of making a manual target optional. Her contribution is analysis of the documented change, not evidence that an earlier proposal caused it.

Monitor the delivery trade-offs

Where the option is available, monitor CPM, reach and frequency against the campaign objective, particularly when targeting is narrow. Omitting a manual target does not establish that resulting delivery will be efficient or commercially appropriate. Budget-spending behaviour and useful reach are separate questions.

This capability is not officially named a ‘Maximise Reach’ strategy in the supplied evidence. That label should not be presented as Google terminology. Because the help page is undated, it also cannot establish when the beta appeared or whether it represents a new launch.

A limited test can define the desired reach or frequency outcome and relevant targeting constraints in advance. This is an evaluation recommendation, not a forecast of performance.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

Making target CPM optional changes the control available to advertisers, but it does not remove delivery risk. Narrow audiences make monitoring especially important.

What to check next

  • Check whether the account and campaign type are eligible for the beta.
  • Confirm whether target CPM is set or intentionally left unset.
  • Monitor CPM, reach and frequency against the stated campaign objective.
