Demand Gen video overlays warrant a combined creative review

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

A screenshot credited to Gert Jan van Egmond shows a Demand Gen control that can place text-asset messaging over video creative. Its enabled state does not establish a universal default or rollout.

What changed

What was observed

A screenshot credited to Gert Jan van Egmond shows an “Overlay on videos” option under Demand Gen asset optimisation. The described function is to display messaging from text assets over video creative. The evidence supports the presence of this setting in the observed interface, not its availability across all accounts.

Review the assembled treatment

Assess a video together with any potential overlay rather than treating the footage as an isolated asset. Where wording is already embedded in the video, an additional text layer could duplicate the message, compete for attention or reduce clarity. The useful review is visual and editorial: does the combined treatment remain legible and coherent?

Record the underlying video, associated text assets and observed setting when testing. This creates a basis for comparing treatments without turning a single screenshot into a general product specification.

Do not generalise the toggle state

The switch is enabled in the example, but that does not prove that it is enabled by default, compulsory or deployed to every account. Check the setting in the relevant campaign and assess the rendered result where a preview or test is available.

For a practical account check, keep a record of the selected overlay setting beside the approved video and its message. Compare what a viewer can read in the preview with the intended call to action. This is a creative QA recommendation, not evidence that the observed control changes delivery or performance.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

An overlay can materially change how existing footage communicates even when the source video remains unchanged. Reviewing the complete treatment helps prevent duplicated, obscured or conflicting messaging.

What to check next

  • Check whether selected videos already contain embedded text or calls to action.
  • Review the overlay state with the corresponding text assets before launch.
  • Record availability and behaviour as account-level observations.
