AI Max appears auto-enabled in some Google Ad Grants accounts
PPC News Feed reports, from Dan Kabakov, Ad Grants accounts in which AI Max shows as enabled without the manager switching it on; Search Engine Land followed on 20 October. Google has not commented, and Ad Grants accounts have their own policy limits on bidding and quality. Grant accounts need the same AI Max audit as paid ones, so check each campaign's setting and its search terms before the next policy review.

What changed
What this means in practice
The important distinction is between an account setting being visible and a confirmed programme-wide migration. The reported examples support an audit of affected accounts, but do not establish how many nonprofit accounts changed, whether managers had received notices, or whether the same behaviour applies to all Ad Grants campaigns.
A useful account review starts with the current campaign settings and change history. Record the AI Max state, any available change attribution, search-term coverage and destination behaviour. Compare those observations with the organisation's approved mission, geography and conversion goals before deciding whether the configuration is appropriate. Do not assume a setting change automatically means a policy violation.
For a nonprofit, irrelevant reach can consume management time even where the media is grant-funded. Evaluate meaningful actions such as qualified enquiries or completed applications, rather than celebrating additional impressions. Preserve a dated screenshot and the account-specific evidence if the setting appears to have changed without the responsible manager's action.
Preserve the account change history, the campaign setting and the search terms around the observation. The report is useful as a prompt for inspection, but it does not show how many grant accounts are affected or why a particular setting changed. Review eligibility and policy compliance separately from the presence of an AI Max control.
