Google Ads renames inventory types and changes the default to Maximum from May 2026
Google Ads is rebranding its content suitability inventory tiers starting May 2026. "Expanded" becomes Maximum inventory; "Standard" becomes Moderate inventory; and "Limited inventory" keeps its current name.

What changed
Thomas Eccel has flagged the underlying detail: the exclusions, definitions, and monetisation standards behind each tier are unchanged: only the labels are new.
The operational consequence sits in the default behaviour. Accounts that have never manually selected an inventory mode will default to Maximum (the old Expanded), which broadens delivery to Google Video Partners and across YouTube content. Brands with strict content guidelines or category-sensitive creative: such as alcohol, fintech, or healthcare-adjacent: should verify the active mode before the rollout.
Why it matters for advertisers
For you, this means a 30-second check in Tools → Content suitability is the action this week. If you have not deliberately set the inventory type before, your account will be moved to the most permissive setting unless you act.
