Google Ads switches call recording to "Yes" by default from 1 July

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Google Ads will automatically switch call recording to "Yes" on 1 July 2026 for any account that has not actively selected a setting. Accounts that want to keep recording disabled must change the setting to "No" before 30 June; otherwise, the auto-default will apply.

What changed

Leaving the setting blank constitutes consent to the Call Ads Supplemental Terms by inaction. The change is reversible at any time after default via account settings.

Arpan Banerjee has flagged the change and noted the broader pipeline it feeds into. AI qualification of call leads: covered as a Week 17 entry under Google's AI-qualified call leads launch: begins May 2026 and uses the recordings to evaluate intent signals beyond duration alone. Auto-defaulting recordings to "Yes" is the data-collection mechanism that enables AI evaluation at scale and turns dormant accounts into contributing inputs to the broader Smart Bidding signal layer.

THE COLLECTIVE PERSPECTIVE

Why it matters for advertisers

For you, this means a single decision before 30 June: actively select "No" if recording is unwelcome on legal, regional, or client-confidentiality grounds, or accept the auto-default and the AI-qualification pipeline that follows. Particularly relevant for agencies managing accounts in jurisdictions with strict two-party consent rules and for healthcare or financial services advertisers excluded from the AI-qualified leads programme but still subject to the recording auto-default.
