Google Ads · Status at source date: Reported test

Google is testing ads in AI Mode for people who connect their apps

Written by Paid Media Collective
IN BRIEF

Google told Search Engine Land on 16 October that it is "starting to test ads in AI Mode in Search for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence". Its help page says ads "will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library", but summaries and inferences from connected apps may be used, sensitive categories are excluded and advertisers get no access; the privacy policy effective 16 October adds a matching qualifier. In March Google had said there were no ads for connected-app users. Nothing changes in targeting settings, so note it for client questions about AI Mode placements.

What changed

What this means in practice

This is a test of the user experience and the information that may inform it, not a new audience list advertisers can select. Connected-app data and an advertiser's own first-party data are separate concepts. A brand should not tell a client that it can target an individual's email or inspect their personal photo library on the strength of this report.

For campaign teams, the immediate work is explanatory: distinguish an AI Mode placement from the signals used by the platform to choose or contextualise an ad. Review actual placement reporting and the current official help wording before updating an account presentation. The observed test does not establish universal availability or a new campaign setup workflow.

A useful client note should state what is confirmed, which information remains private to the platform, and which controls the advertiser actually has. Keep that note tied to the dated documentation. Avoid translating a policy qualifier into a broader promise about targeting capabilities, or treating a limited test as a settled forecast for Search inventory.

For client communications, distinguish the information used to personalise a consumer experience from information disclosed to an advertiser. The reported test does not give advertisers access to private inboxes or photo libraries. Keep the privacy wording and test scope with the explanation rather than simplifying this to direct email-based targeting.
